What Owners Ask Before Buying an AI Server
Straight answers — cost, privacy, models, install, and support — to the questions Texas owners ask before they put a server in their own office. No jargon, no sales spin. Still stuck? Ask us anything.
What is a custom AI server, in plain English?+
It is a computer we build for your office that runs AI models — chat, document search, and more — for your whole team. Instead of logging into someone else's cloud, your AI runs on hardware you own, on your own network.
Do I need a server, or would a workstation be enough?+
A workstation serves one person at a desk; a server serves the whole team and runs around the clock. If several people will use AI, or it needs to be always on, you want a server. We will tell you which fits before you spend anything.
What's the difference between buying from you and using ChatGPT or another cloud tool?+
The cloud tool is rented — you pay monthly, your data leaves the building, and the vendor controls the models and limits. Our server is owned — one cost, your data stays in-house, and you run any open model you like with no rate limits.
Is my data really private on a server you build?+
Yes. The model, your prompts, and your documents all stay on hardware inside your office and travel only across your own network. We can even air-gap it. Nothing goes to us or any vendor after install.
What does it cost to own an AI server?+
It is a one-time build cost that depends on the GPUs and capacity you need, plus optional install and support. The point is that it stops there — no monthly fee. We scope a real number against the cloud fees you'd avoid.
What do you do that I couldn't do myself?+
Picking the right hardware and models, building and burn-in testing the server, tuning it to run fast, securing it, and installing it on-site — then being a Texas phone call away when something needs attention. The idea is easy; a dependable build is the work.
Who installs and supports the server?+
We do, in person, across the Houston metro and Fort Bend County. The team that built your server is the team that delivers it and answers when you call — not an offshore queue.
What if my needs grow later?+
We can build with headroom — extra GPU slots, more storage, room to scale — so you grow the server instead of replacing it. When you genuinely outgrow a box, we plan the next one with you.
Can a TIS server run the latest open models as they come out?+
Yes. Because you own the hardware and it runs open models, you can update to new releases as they ship. You are never stuck waiting for a vendor to add a model to their menu.
How do I get started?+
Tell us what you want your AI to do and roughly how many people will use it. We will spec a build, show you the cost against the fees you'd drop, and schedule an on-site install. Use Ask Us Anything below or call 832-338-2926.
How much VRAM do I need?+
It depends on the model: an 8B model at Q4 needs roughly 5–6GB, while a 70B model at Q4 needs about 38–40GB, which a single 96GB card handles with room to spare. Our VRAM calculator maps the model you want to the card that fits.
Ollama or vLLM?+
Ollama for a small team and low concurrency — it is simple and dependable; vLLM when many people use the server at once, since its batching gives much higher throughput at load. We set up whichever fits and migrate you if you outgrow it. See our Ollama vs vLLM comparison.
Will my office circuit run it?+
A single-GPU server usually runs fine on a normal office circuit; multi-GPU and data-center-class builds often need a dedicated 240V circuit and real cooling. We check this during the on-site visit — our power and cooling guide covers the numbers.
Tower or rack?+
Most small businesses start with a tower under a desk or in a closet — it is the right call for 1–4 GPUs and a normal office. A rack makes sense when you need dense multi-GPU, front-to-back airflow, or PDU power. Our rack vs tower guide draws the line.
